Planned power outage in Hanmer Springs

As part of MainPower’s commitment to reduce the frequency of unplanned outages to the Hanmer Springs area, we are preparing to undertake a two-day planned power outage to complete scheduled electrical maintenance and upgrades to the area.

Completing this work over two days will reduce the need for future planned outages. This work has been planned in consultation with the Hanmer Springs Community Board and a subsequent community meeting in early 2024, to minimise disruption to the area.

When

Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th March 2025.
7:00am – 6:00pm on both days.

    • All connections in Hanmer Springs will be affected.
    • Electricity generation will be powering some areas throughout the outage period.
    • Electricity connection will be restored to all connections overnight.

What is happening?

MainPower will be undertaking planned maintenance and upgrades to the Hanmer Springs electricity network.

During the outage you will see many of our team completing as many jobs as possible including; pole replacements, line upgrades, underground cabling, asset replacement and tree maintenance. There will also be traffic management in place to support our work.

Generation

Generators will power some of the town, including most of the central business hub. The location of generation assets has been planned to align with our network configuration, and to maintain supply to key community services.

Generated connections may still experience some short power outages as we connect and disconnect generators safely.

Find out how you will be impacted

Notifications will be sent by MainPower and Electricity Retailers in early February to the contact information used for power bills.

Notifications from MainPower will be sent via text message. Notifications from your electricity retailer will be sent via email or post (depending on how you receive your power bill).

The notifications will detail exactly how your connection will be impacted. For example, you may be notified of multiple short outages, which will allow us to connect generation. Or, you may be notified of two full day outages between 7:00am and 6:00pm (power will be restored overnight).

If you are not the contact person on an electricity bill, you can contact us on 0800 30 90 80 to find out how your connection will be affected.

Please note:

    • Connections receiving generation will still experience short power outages as we connect and disconnect generators safely. Please read the notifications carefully and plan accordingly.

    • Some generators will be connected to the network between 3:30pm – 5:30pm on Monday 3rd March. Impacted connections will receive an outage notification for this work.

    • Homes and businesses can organise their own generation privately through local services.

    • This work has been planned in consultation with the Hanmer Springs Community Board and a public meeting in early 2024. It is the first of a 3-5 year plan to complete planned works during an annual two day window, until complete.

    • We cannot guarantee that we will not need outages in the future to complete urgent works. However, all efforts will be made to plan future works into agreed future annual windows for outages.

Thank you for your patience

We understand that planned and un-planned outages are inconvenient. Completing this work over two days will reduce the need for multiple planned outages throughout the year.

The upgrades and maintenance we are completing will ultimately improve the reliability of the electricity network to the area.

Hot water load testing under way ahead of winter

Until mid‑April, we’re working closely with retailers to carry out hot water load testing as we prepare our network for the coming winter season.

These tests run for a couple of hours each day, Monday to Friday, with no testing taking place over weekends. Because each test window is relatively short, customers are unlikely to notice any changes to their hot water supply.

The purpose of this work is to help us better understand how much controllable load is available during the summer months. Gaining accurate insights now means we can model customer savings more effectively by reducing system load at peak times. It also helps us assess whether this load flexibility could assist Transpower in deferring an upcoming local transmission upgrade.

This testing is an important part of ensuring a resilient, efficient network that supports our community.
