MainPower is stepping into the spotlight at the Annual Connection, the premier three-day event that brings together line mechanics, cable jointers, and industry stakeholders from across Aotearoa.
Organised by Connexis, the event is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of skill, safety, and camaraderie in the electricity supply industry.
MainPower’s team is represented by seasoned competitors Johnny Wilson & Gav Bell, as well as Ren Tangaroa and newcomer Hengi Ngauamo. It’s a strong combination of both experience and emerging talent.
For Johnny, who’s competed six times before, the event is a personal challenge.
“It’s all about safety really, and doing better than last time. It’s the best of the best – there’s nothing in it between the teams.”
Gav echoes the sentiment. “It’s a few days of multiple events: first aid, pole installs, electrical regulations. You’re worn out by the end of it, but we do it because we love it.”
Hengi, stepping up for the first time, has already earned the respect of his teammates.
“Shout out to Hengi for putting his hand up and stepping up to the challenge,” Johnny said, calling him the “future of MainPower.”
The Annual Connection is judged by industry professionals and trainers, with points awarded across a range of timed events. But as the team points out, it’s not just about speed – it’s about doing the job right and by the book. Events like pole top rescues and first aid drills are not only tests of skill but also of trust and teamwork.
“We’re not going to let somebody fall,” Gav said. “If someone’s breaking down, we’re going to work on it.”
MainPower has a proud history at the event. In 2018, the team won the Connexis Line Mechanic Competition, and in 2019 Johnny was recognised with the Outstanding Leader Award. Kirk McDonald also brought home the Cable Jointer Trophy in 2018. These accolades reflect the company’s commitment to excellence and its role in promoting best practices in health and safety.
Beyond the competition, the event is a showcase of innovation, with new gear, products, and technologies on display. It’s also a chance to connect with peers – and of course, rivals.
“Biggest rivalry? The North Island, of course,” Gav said.
As the team prepares for an intense week – one that takes them out of the field and into the arena – they carry with them not just our support and the MainPower flag, but the will and drive to step out of their comfort zone and lead by example.
