MainPower Alpine Winter Festival coming in 2026

MainPower New Zealand Ltd is excited to partner with Hurunui Tourism and the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa to bring the MainPower Alpine Winter Festival to Hanmer Springs next year.

Acting Chief Executive Damien Whiffen says the opportunity to become the major sponsor for the successful festival reinforces the lines company’s commitment to the alpine village community.

“As a community trust owned business, we need to ensure our sponsorship efforts are going to the right place at the right time, providing value to our communities. Events like this bring a significant social return on investment for our beneficiaries and encourage tourism and investment in the region.

“The Alpine Winter Festival, which will be in its fifth year next year, has fast become an iconic event that brings tourists, economic growth and a bucket load of fun to the Hanmer Springs village. We are excited to back this brilliant event and be part of the festivities during winter 2026.”

The festival, which runs for two weeks from 4 – 18 July 2026, is expected to attract around 40,000 visitors to the region. From the ice-skating rink to light displays, husky racing, star gazing, alpine markets and more, there will be more than 40 activities and events across 15 days.

“We’re absolutely chuffed that the Alpine Winter Festival is happening this year with the fantastic support of MainPower,” says Sarah Wiblin, General Manager of Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa. “We can’t wait to see our biggest and best festival yet.”

Whiffen says MainPower is fully committed to making the most of the opportunity to support the businesses and wider community of Hanmer Springs.

“We intend to have our teams on the ground throughout the festival, answering questions and providing information for our customers. We’re looking forward to strengthening our ties to this region and celebrating everything special about Hanmer Springs.”

Hot water load testing under way ahead of winter

Until mid‑April, we’re working closely with retailers to carry out hot water load testing as we prepare our network for the coming winter season.

These tests run for a couple of hours each day, Monday to Friday, with no testing taking place over weekends. Because each test window is relatively short, customers are unlikely to notice any changes to their hot water supply.

The purpose of this work is to help us better understand how much controllable load is available during the summer months. Gaining accurate insights now means we can model customer savings more effectively by reducing system load at peak times. It also helps us assess whether this load flexibility could assist Transpower in deferring an upcoming local transmission upgrade.

This testing is an important part of ensuring a resilient, efficient network that supports our community.
