Annual SWER line inspections

MainPower is carrying out its annual inspections of Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) lines across the network.

SWER lines are common in rural areas and use a single overhead wire to carry electricity. MainPower inspects these lines every year around October and November to identify potential hazards, maintain network reliability and help keep people, livestock and property safe.

During the inspection period, landowners may see MainPower staff or contractors carrying out inspections on or near their property.

If you have SWER lines on your property, it is also a good time to check that everyone working on the property knows where power lines are located and understands how to work safely around them.

Keep trees and vegetation clear of lines, take extra care when operating tall machinery and make sure staff, contractors and visitors know where overhead lines are before starting work.

If you come across a damaged or fallen power line, never assume it is safe. Stay at least eight metres away, keep other people and animals clear, and report it immediately to MainPower on 0800 30 90 80.

Power line safety is everyone’s responsibility.
