$30,000 awarded to local community groups and schools

Thirty North Canterbury schools and charitable organisations have been named as recipients of the 2019 MainPower Community Fund.

North Canterbury’s electricity distributors, MainPower New Zealand Limited, have been running the contestable fund since 2015. Chief Executive Andy Lester is pleased with how the fund has evolved over the years.

Due to the popularity of the Community Fund, we increased the funding available to $30,000 in 2019, a $10,000 increase,” says Mr. Lester. “We also introduced a separate voting stage, where a group of finalists were profiled online, allowing members of the community to have a say in where the funds will be allocated.”

$20,000 has been allocated to community groups and $10,000 to school projects. The recipients represent a range of community activities.

“Whether the funding is going towards giving kids the chance to learn about the environment, or supporting the region’s most vulnerable, the key thing is that all of the recipients are doing great things for North Canterbury,” Mr. Lester adds.

We’re making great progress restoring power across the network. Currently there are 85 customers without power, but we have a large number of crews in multiple locations again today.

We will have a helicopter operating in the Hurunui Mouth area around midday today. The helicopter is a twin engine and is carrying out complex river crossing repairs. It will be travelling low and slow, and it will be quite loud.

Please keep the area clear so our teams can carry out these urgent repairs to restore power to the area.

Estimated restoration times are regularly being uploaded to the Outage Map.

If you have any concerns or questions, please call our customer service team on 0800 30 90 80.
