MainPower breaks ground on new solar farm in North Canterbury

11 December marked an important milestone with a site blessing and ground breaking to officially start construction of MainPower’s Thongcaster Road solar farm.

Acting Chief Executive Damien Whiffen joined Sam Rowsell, programme manager at Lightyears Solar, and our project team, lead by Duncan Thomason on site to celebrate the beginning of works.

The Thongcaster Road Solar Farm is a 7.3 MW development on a 10‑hectare site that, once complete, will generate enough renewable electricity to power around 1,250 homes.

Thank you to everyone involved in getting us to this point. It’s a significant step in our commitment to decarbonise Aotearoa and invest in a more sustainable energy future for our community.
