MainPower has extended its support for education in the region with the unveiling of “The 5 Es of Energy – The Power to Make it Happen”.
The “5 Es of Energy” is a teacher resource focussing on energy efficiency, energy safety and renewable energy.
The programme, which includes the teacher’s guide book, interactive USB card and resource tool kit, is provided free by MainPower to each primary school and area school in the North Canterbury and Kaikoura region.
The 5Es of Energy programme aligns with the current New Zealand Curriculum with its focus around integrating conceptual science with literacy teaching.
The teacher’s book contains material which can be used across years 1 – 8.
The publication was commissioned by MainPower and written by Ken Donaldson, Lecturer in Science and Physical Education at the University of Canterbury.

“Our aim is to work with teachers to encourage a greater interest in science and the environment at a young age. The teachers told us easily accessible material with hands-on application was what was needed. We are confident “The 5 Es of Energy” meets that brief, and the children will have fun trying out the simple experiments and gathering the information to learn about energy,” says Julie Battersby, Community Relations Manager at MainPower.
“We are hopeful we will see more science and engineering graduates come from our region in the future,” says Julie Battersby.
