Four high achieving North Canterbury sportspeople were announced as winners of the 2009 MainPower Youth Sports Scholarships in October 2009. For the second year in succession the major scholarship went to Angie Smit, a New Zealand 800 metre specialist. Angie was awarded $5,000 towards the costs of training and travel. One runner-up scholarship was awarded to Jess Loe, a member of the New Zealand under 23 Women's Coxless Four, which won bronze at the Junior World Rowing Championships. Jess received $2,000. The other runner-up scholarship was jointly awarded to Julian Svoboda and Evan Kennedy, members of the New Zealand under18 Men's Coxless Quad. Julian and Evan received $1,000 each.
