The Electricity Industry in New Zealand

Currently the New Zealand Electricity Industry is split into four key areas -generation, transmission, distribution and retailing. The Electricity Authority is the market regulator and determines the rules and regulations under which the industry operates.

Generation

Generation

Electricity supplying the North Canterbury and Kaikoura regions is generated by hydro-electric power stations throughout the South Island.

National

National Transmission System Grid

Transpower owns and operates the national grid. The system uses high voltage 220kV and 110kV lines and equipment to connect generators and distributors to the national grid.

Distribution

Distribution Network

MainPower owns and operates the power lines and equipment used to transport power from the national grid to your property boundary.

Retailers

Retailers & You

To get electricity to your property the electricity retailers, such as Contact, Meridian, Trustpower, Genesis & Mercury Energy have agreements with MainPower permitting them to use the distribution network to transport electricity to you.
