Warm Up Kaikoura

MainPower, in association with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), insulated 320 Kaikoura homes in the first six months of 2009. The project was a voluntary energy efficiency project aimed at making homes warmer, drier, healthier, more comfortable to live in and cheaper to run.

Designed as a pilot programme, the concept was to develop processes which would enable whole townships to be insulated, thus making the impact of well-insulated homes more widely felt within the community.

The homes received all or some of the core measures of under-floor and ceiling insulation, exterior door draught-stoppers and cylinder wraps.

The feedback from participating home owners has been very positive, with many noticing immediate differences in the room temperatures and the dryness of their homes.

The average cost of insulating a home with the core measures of ceiling and under-floor insulation, draught-stoppers and cylinder wraps is between $2,500 and $3,000, depending on the size of the home and what measures are needed.
