Youth Sports Scholarships

The Youth Sports Scholarships (established in 2004) has been developed to aid and assist local talent to perform to their utmost ability while raising the profile of the region as a whole.
Such a Scholarship provides an obtainable goal for the youth of the region to strive for and initiate a foundation that will breed a regional culture of sporting success and excellence.

MainPower funds three Youth Sports Scholarships at an annual cost of $9,000.

Four high achieving North Canterbury sportspeople were announced as winners of the 2009 MainPower Youth Sports Awards at the annual North Canterbury MainPower Sports Awards on 30 October. 

• For the second year in succession the major scholarship went to Angie Smit, the New Zealand’s 800 metre specialist. Angie was awarded $5,000 towards the costs of training and travel. 
• One runner up scholarship was awarded to Jess Loe, a member of the New Zealand U23 Women’s Coxless Four which won bronze at the Junior World Rowing Championships. Jess received $2,000. 
• The other runner up scholarship was jointly awarded to Julian Svoboda and Evan Kennedy, members of the New Zealand U18 Men’s Coxless Quad. Julian and Evan received $1,000 each.
