Eight local groups to benefit from MainPower Community Fund

Recipients of the MainPower Community Fund have been announced with $20,000 to be shared between eight community groups and schools.

Throughout August, residents of North Canterbury and Kaikoura were invited to vote for the groups they thought were the most deserving of funding support, with the $20,000 fund divided proportionately across the top eight groups.

Leithfield School received the largest share ($5,000) after receiving the most votes from the community. Leithfield School Principal Sharon Marsh says the $5,000 will finish off their fundraising efforts for the new school playground, which is due for completion next term.

The annual contestable fund received record support this year, with the community casting over 5,000 votes, double the number received last year.

Miss Lilly’s Angel Trust, a charitable group set up to help communities affected by the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, will receive $2,000. The funding will go towards their event, marking the anniversary of the earthquake in Kaikoura.

The Waiau Community Pool will also receive a $1,800 share of the fund, which will go towards rebuilding the community pool, destroyed in the November earthquake.

A number of regional schools also received a share of the fund: Rotherham School ($3,800), Southbrook School ($2,400), Waiau School ($2,000), Fernside School ($1,600), and Broomfield School ($1,400). The schools will put the money towards a variety of projects including subsidising school camps and making improvements to school grounds.
